First Look- My Book on Business Dining Etiquette

I am so excited to share this news with you! My book on essential business dining etiquette- The Fine Art of Fine Dining has gone for printing. Soon I will hold this labour of love in my hands!

The Fine Art of Fine Dining
The origins of this book go back a few years. I was teaching how to use a fork to my little three year old. She understood the use and told me in simple words, “Mom, you are the best teacher ever!”
I puffed up with pride for almost a week afterward. Soon my brat announced to her class teacher that her mother taught her how to use the fork to eat. In the next PTA meeting her class teacher particularly mentioned this and said, “Today’s children need this! I don’t see most of them learning how to eat well at such a tender age. Your child is doing very well for a 3 year old.”
In a separate incidence, at a seminar, I observed people at the buffet spread not knowing how to eat using Western cutlery. I also noticed a few other things- hungry salespeople pressing their business cards into any one’s and every one’s hands, entrepreneurs spouting their stories over a meal without connecting to their audience, networkers at the breakfast table in the restaurant not knowing how to call for the waiter or behave when a senior person is around. This state of affairs bothered me. Where is the etiquette and protocol so necessary in a business environment?
While studying image consulting the very first lesson we were taught was the science behind what is called the first impressions. We learnt about the brain’s photographic memory and its inherent nature to make judgments about someone within mere seconds.
Once these impression filters are formed, the brain will see that person through this filter only. It is rather difficult then to change the impressions you have formed about someone. You have to deliberately understand what your brain is doing and then consciously attempt to change your impressions about someone. Not an easy task!
It is better to put your best foot forward from the word go! More so in a business environment where your success in buying, selling, collaborating, working as a team, getting a job, everything depends on those first few seconds of meeting someone new!
I want to help you create amazing first impressions wherever you go. This book is a humble attempt to put down all I have learnt of business dining etiquette- a culmination of my background as a military daughter and wife and the years of experience gathered while working for a five star luxury hotel.
How will you benefit by learning business dining etiquette?
The Fine Art of Fine Dining will first help you understand just why it is imperative for you to exhibit good table manners and how you can do so in various social and business dining environments.
This book deals with the nitty gritty, right from how to hold a knife and fork, how to hold a wine glass and what you should do with your napkin.
This book also talks about the bigger picture. How do you greet someone when you approach the dining table? Should you sit or stand in mixed company? How should you behave at the table? What is your body language speaking about you? How should you talk to your fellow diners? When should business be discussed?
The magnum opus in this book is the chapter on how to use Western utensils for eating Indian food! I feel it is all well and good to talk about Western ideologies but if it can’t be adapted to local purposes it serves a limited purpose. Here I tell you how you can weave through Indian cuisine with ease on an business dinner table using forks. knives and spoons.
I love wines. They are the most versatile alcoholic drink in my humble opinion, pairing with almost all types of foods from across the world. But Identifying a vegan bread when you see one becomes of utmost importance when if you intent on coupling it with wine. I share with you my rudimentary knowledge gleaned from working with a five star hotel and from tasting some really good wines along the way.
I don’t know why I put the “Toasts” section in the appendix. However after I read the manuscript I realised I did it because I am quite the “fauji” at heart! It is such an elemental part of my existence! I hope you will enjoy reading that last section as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Why should you buy The Fine Art of Fine Dining?
This book is your absolute essential guide to business dining etiquette. Whether you are a job seeker, a team leader, a budding entrepreneur, a world traveler, a trainer, I can guarantee you will make amazing impressions on the people you interact after you read this book!
The Fine Art of Fine Dining should be available within the next week. I have received the book cover and we are going through the final approvals. Oh I can’t wait to hold this baby in my hands finally! Stay tuned for nuggets on business dining etiquette and some excerpts from the book!
